Hello world.

My name is Asante, and I am a self-proclaimed certified nerd.

I often find myself researching for fun. I read ahead in text books. I know weird facts and words that normal people don’t care about. I’m going to graduate school to study MORE random facts that only I care about (as far as my friends are concerned, anyways). I read. A LOT.

BUT… I know when to turn it off.

You know, like that self-awareness kicks in at some point and I realize there is more to life than showing people how intelligent I am. I’m realizing now that in this regard, I am an anomaly.

I’ve spent the past 3 weeks getting to know quite a few nerds as I navigate the uncomfortable realm of grad school interviews, and let me tell you: in 3 weeks of these there have not been more that 4-5 “normal” applicants per pool. Seriously. The rest are charmingly, but blatantly socially awkward. To the point where I felt awkward for NOT being awkward. How twisted is that?

I mean I appreciate a person who can really delve into the significance of a single cell patch clamp response. Or the consummatory dopamine circuit. Or even the molecular significance of a missing post-synaptic transporter. (Getting away from you there? I know, fear not, I’m coming back. And yes, your eyes are supposed to be glazing over.) But for the love of everything that is good, approachable and non-awkward, give it a rest sometimes! I love my work and I love the brain and all that, but if you can’t find a balance between your academic motives and your personal life, I don’t know what to say for you.

Even the professors I’ve met, after I  ably describe/discuss the complex parameters of our study and what I do within it, have asked me “What else do you do? Like, when you’re NOT in the lab?” It would surprise me if some of these folks had an answer to that question. Like, seriously.

I love being a nerd, don’t get me wrong. I enjoy being in the company of such intelligent and driven people. But when the professors are gone and the grad students are offering you a beer, TAKE IT. And then relax. We all know you’re smart. Now show us that you can be a normal person. At least until the beer wears off.

I’m baaaaack!

Hello lovelies :) Didja miss me?

I know, I know. It’s been forever. :-x But like I said before, my life has been in shambles lately, a whooole lot of mess pulling in a bunch of directions. So what have I been upto? Lets run through it.

1. VEGAS. Yes. I was there. It was unbelievable, I had the most amazing time! Me and 3 of my very good friends jetted out to beautiful, sunny Nevada to live out our own version of “The Hangover”. We went out, saw a show, played tourist, gambled (I won $7.14 y’all. Can we say ballin’?), had In-N’-Out Burger for the first time in life (Dear Lord. If I can eat nothing else for the rest of my life… I’ll never complain again. Amen.), spent WAY too much money, and bonded with my Wolfpack. Vacation of EPIC proportions. Can’t wait for the next one :)

2. Grad School. One interview down, 3 to go! The first one went REALLY well, I have high hopes that  I showed Vandy without a doubt that I am AWESOME. Like, seriously. lol. And Nashville was actually a LOT of fun. A friend of mine was nice enough to take me around town and show me a great time, I had a blast. Who knows…. I may be moving to Tennessee y’all :) lol

3. My Poor Pookie.

Yes. That is the formerly sleek and unblemished driver’s side of my Pookie, otherwise known as my ’09 Camry. *cue the hot salty tears of depression… and pour out a little Turtle Wax for her.* Note to all: I don’t care how little regard you hold for your piece of $#!? car, but I LOVE mine. Blind turns in parking garages have 5mph speed limits FOR A REASON. *sniff*. Stupid ’96 Cavalier. At least the cop was fine though. Officer Jones….. #yesplease. lol.

4. Workworkwork…. and BS co-workers. Any of you who follow me on Twitter knows that I faced quite the debacle with a co-worker last week. #deeeeeepsigh. Lets get one thing straight, shall we? I am many things, but a pushover is not one of them. When I ask you to do something and you don’t, just because I don’t say anything, doesn’t mean I’m not aware of your bull. So don’t act all shocked and surprised when I stop asking you to do stuff. There is NOTHING on this planet I despise more than people who don’t have the decency to follow through when asked for a favor. If you don’t want to do it, SAY NO. Seriously! So that I know not to bother next time. Because I will only put my work integrity in your pathetic, incapable hands so many times before I relegate you to a box reserved for the lazy and irresponsible. Do NOT mess with my job. I take my image at work VERY seriously, and don’t appreciate those who can’t do the same. < /rant >

5. SuperBowl Commercials …meh. Except for these two!:

Greatness. And no, I’m not going to comment on the game this year. I was bored to tears. And the Steelers…. just…. fail.

6. New Ink …Yes I know. I’m an addict. But I can’t help myself lol. Officially saving up for tattoo #6… Once I finalize the design, I’ll share. :)

7. BookyWooks! I’ve been reading up a storm in my web-absence. “The Unnamed” (Joshua Ferris),”Bitch Is The New Black” (Helena Andrews), “Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self” (Danielle Evans), “Naked” (David Sedaris) and always more to come. Each VERY different, but I like the variety. Hit me up for more detailed reviews if you’d like, but I’d recommend them all! Long Live REAL books!

8. Tiger In the wake of the insanity that is my life, I had to give up my baby boo, my dog Tiger. Still miss him something FIERCE! :( Hopefully once my schedule dials back I’ll be able to get another dog…. But I miss my Punkin’ Face. I really hope he found a good family though.

Anyways I should really get back to work… Though this was a nice break, time to mosey on back to the craziness that is my work day. Later folks :)

Dear #naturalhair friends…

Posted in beautiful, catching up, hair, happyness, Life, Me, Nerdyness, revelations, The Wonderful Internet on 07/01/2010 by asante

Disclaimer: I am NOT a “natural-hair-blogger”. This blog’s sole purpose is NOT to discuss natural hair, or any hair for that matter. I am nothing even closely resembling an expert. It is just a topic that is important to me, since I’m fairly new in the game. Just had to throw that out there, lol. Yes, I know I talk about hair too much. No, it will never stop. lol. Alright, here we go….

Hey y’all!

First off, I’ve put the fro away for a while….

I know a lot of folks get nervous about micros when it comes to breakage etc., but for my hair, honestly braid extensions can do no wrong. My hair really enjoys the break. Plus with the next 2 months of my life including both a beach vacation and moving to a new apartment…. I definitely have more pressing things to worry about than keeping the ‘fro looking presentable lol.

Secondly, even though I’ve only had natural hair for less than a year, I’ve noticed that my research-loving super-nerd status has worked in my favor  as far as what I’ve figured out about how my natural hair works. And in turn, I’ve had a few people actually asking ME for advice.

Wait, really, Me? Seriously?

*cue the Goofy bashful stance*…. Gawrsh. lol.

Anyways, it’s flattering :) Especially when I’m about 92.6% sure that I don’t have any idea what I’m doing. lol. So for the benefit of my dear friends who are looking to me for advice, I wanted to lay it all out for ya. 100%, my natural journey (so far) from start to present. (And for the benefit of those who do NOT care one little bit about my hair, or anybody else’s hair, the rest of my blabbering is below the cut lol.)

“The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” – Steig Larsson

Posted in hobbies, Life, Me, Nerdyness, reading, Uncategorized on 06/17/2010 by asante

Paperback CoverSo I just finished this book this afternoon, and I have this to say:

READ. THIS. BOOK.

lol. I LOVED it. I’m a big fan of crime/drama thrillers when they aren’t written to be impossibly lame, and this book definitely delivers. I have to credit my bestie with giving me the push to read this one, I saw the sequel at her place a few weeks ago, and decided I needed to catch up with the series to get on her level :)

But on a serious note, this was an extremely satisfying book. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who decides to read it, but it is such a well crafted, engaging, and seriously entertaining read. And it’s written for a  Swedish audience, so you get to feel a lil’ international as you pore through it lol.

I really appreciated the strong social tones the story brings to light as well. After months and months listening to woman after woman who has been subjugated to sexual violence and assault by men who on many levels, hate women (pseudo reference to the Swedish title of this book) I was really impressed that Larsson took such care to address this issue, even if it was fiction. It was well written, and a painfully accurate, but rewarding part of the plot.

Seriously though y’all, it’s a quick, enthralling read, and you won’t regret it.

READ. THIS. BOOK. lol

I am SUCH a nerd… but I’m ok with that.

Posted in Nerdyness, Neuro, TV on 09/15/2009 by asante

So yea, proof that by choosing the brain, I chose the right field of interest: I’m watching an episode of House that is literally one of the COOLEST cases I’ve ever seen. Three words, people:

Alien. Hand. Syndrome.

What is that, you ask? Well before you go wikipedia it (because I know I would, lol.) here’s a quick rundown: for one of some understood (and MANY not understood) reasons, the left and right hemispheres of your brain “disagree” about what your intentions/desires/likes/dislikes are. Let that boggle your mind for a second. lol.

Your left and right brains deal with two different parts of your whole; The Right brain is more creative, impulsive, and uninhibited, while the Left brain deals with more reason, logic, and constraint. People tend to lean one way or the other, with the other half regulating due to connections that go back and forth between the two halves. But what if those connections are interrupted, for instance in a Split Brain patient? (patients with a severing of the connections between the two halves)

In this episode, this man is a split brain patient (to relieve seizures) and his right brain HATES his girlfriend (which is sad, but resulted in a HILARIOUS display) so much, that while he’s gushing about how grateful he is for her help in this time of need, his left hand slapped the sense out of her. WTF??? lol  And while his left hand (right brain) hates medical procedures, it can be distracted by playing air guitar. Then his left brain makes him button his shirt, and the right makes him undo it. I just think that’s endlessly interesting. Imagine disagreeing with yourself on such a basic level that you can’t control it??? This goes waaaay deeper than indecisiveness.

One of the doctors on the show brought up a crazy thought too: Imagine if everyone really has two distinct personalities in them, we just manage to control them? So who’s normal? the AHS or MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder) people who let those “extra people” loose every once in a while, or those of us who are constantly restraining our other selves? What makes the dominant half dominant? What if that other person is more interesting than you are? More fun? More successful? Should all of us Right-Brainers go Left for a while, just to see what happens? Who knows. I’m going to keep pondering for the next 28 minutes lol.

Yea, I know, I’m a nerd. but c’mon this stuff is cool lol. Yes, I am the type of person who used to read my big purple Neuro text book for fun. Don’t judge me. lol.
